When the window opens in summer, Jol must surely have one absolute target, and failure to deliver it would not be an option. He has to find a long-term replacement for Danny Murphy.
I do not dislike Murphy, but it is clear that he is probably 50% of the player he was just 2 or 3 years ago.
Another 6 points this season, which will hopefully only take a few more games to collect, and Jol has to start experimenting. Perhaps today's line-up was part of that endeavour.
Anyway, back to the point...We have other weaknesses in the team, but they are ones we could live with. But finding the long-term successor to DM by the first game of next season at the latest is an absolute must.
If Jol can't uncover a suitable replacement already in the squad, there is no option but to make it the number 1 target to buy in the summer.
You agree?

Permalink Reply by John Smith on February 11, 2012 at 23:25 I agree. He had an excellent first half and played quite well against Man City. But when he's put under pressure he cracks. It won't be easy but we need a replacement in the summer.
Permalink Reply by John Smith on February 11, 2012 at 23:43 Disagree. He plays well alongside Murphy but he's not the same kind of player. He doesn't do long range passing, he holds on to the ball longer than Murphy and doesn't like to stay so deep. I would love to see Huddlestone come here.

Permalink Reply by Arseniy on February 12, 2012 at 0:23 Good shout, I think Huddlestone possesses passing ability no worse than Murphy however better physical presence and an excellent shot, how old is he? If he's hit 30 already then its more of a short term solution.
Permalink Reply by Penalty Shot on February 12, 2012 at 1:05 Dembele has not shown the ability to make the long pass but he can hold the ball longer than Murphy and he can dribble out of trouble. They are different players who have different skills.

Permalink Reply by John Smith on February 12, 2012 at 1:08 Just turned 25. Still got a good 10 years in him. I'd hope that when Redknapp leaves we might be able to nab him.

Permalink Reply by Parsons on February 12, 2012 at 1:22 I don't want the same sort of player. Murphy adds very little to the team.
Dembele keeps possession, Murphy is constantly being disposessed.
Dembele can dribble, Murphy cannot.
As for "long range passing" Murphy plays plenty of these directly out of bounds or directly to the opposition.

Permalink Reply by Ascot White on February 12, 2012 at 1:36 Christ! Murphy is so important to us. H e pulls all the strings in our team. I think Dembele is a great player but how many goals / chances has he created? Not many. Murphy is perfect for us and will be serioulsy hard to replace. Yes he makes the odd stray pass but i guarantee for every bad pass he makes 10 good ones....
Permalink Reply by Parsons on February 12, 2012 at 1:48 Absurd. Murphy has very few assists (4 in 24 PL games?) and this while taking many corners and free kicks and having the attack often go through him. He will be easy to replace.
