Has Clint Dempsey Outgrown Fulham FC?

American Star Could Soon Switch Clubs

Clint Dempsey

Clint Dempsey faces an age-old problem. The question for many athletes often boils down to wanting to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond. A bigger team means more prominence, better experience with better talent and usually more money.

Dempsey is having the best year in his career. He has eighteen goals (in all competitions) in the current season, including two hat tricks. He is currently seventh among leading scorers, ahead of stars like Mario Balotelli and Gareth Bale (although in his defense, Bale is more of an enabler than a scorer).

The American has shown his talent, not only with his great technical ability with the ball (which he has always possessed), but also with an uncanny smell for goal.

Dempsey is carrying the Fulham team which currently sits 13 points away from European qualification, which is the most the modest team can yearn for.

With Dempsey having a breakout year, many are suddenly clamoring for him to move to a team where he actually has a chance to win something, rather than avoiding relegation and sitting comfortably in the middle region of the standings.

Is it more impressive if Dempsey sticks with his current club and fights for a spot in European competition or is it more impressive for Dempsey to move to one of the big clubs?

The all-time top American scorer in the Premier League with 42 goals, Dempsey mentioned earlier this year that he would like to play in the UEFA Champions League.

With Fulham far from ever reaching that stage, it sees a direct statement from the American that he wants to get out to a top team in Europe.

For now no team seems to have taken the bait for Dempsey, although they may be waiting for a better time to approach the American or waiting to see if his spike in form has been luck or a true improvement in his class.

Close this thread now. With the likes of Gary Michael Cappetta on the board today there is no limit to the Fanboy antics we will see. Skidrow and Parsons have a hard-on reading this article as we speak.

Demps is great, his attitude is magnificent and this season he has shown he is at his peak. He would be a good safe buy for one of the big boys and it is probable that in order to satisfy his champions league ambitions he will move on in the summer.

However to say that he is carrying Fulham is just nonsense, over the years there have been many players as good or better than Demps and we would never have said such a thing about them. The only player who deserved such an comment was of course Haynes,

Schwarzer, and Hangeland have in recent years played an equal part to Demps in Fulham's survival.

Demps is a favourite at Fulham and in the States and a couple of hattricks in recent matches have given him good publicity but he is not considered a  "must have " by fans of the bigger teams.

Just a thought...maybe if you didn't reply to this thread it wouldn't get any momentum.  Now go forth and do good deeds.

Again this stuff about him wanting to get out to a top team in Europe.

Fact : if he was good enough he'd be gone by now .

If he makes it through the summer I'll agree with you.

Do you not think that he'd have been grabbed by now if one of the truly top sides had fancied him ? If if he is off he'll be to one of the lesser Euro lights of the Chanmpions' League ,imho.

No , stay here Clint and keep doing what you do best . Now , if we can only get him to score away ...

The reason he hasn't moved on because he is American and due to his age many clubs probably view him as a risk for the price they would have to pay us.

Don't doubt the fact that he isn't good enough.

He scores at World Cups, he has scored against Brazil and Spain in the last three years, two hat tricks in one season in the PL/FA Cup.  He is good enough but timing is everything in sports, if he stays this summer I believe he will always stay at Fulham.

if he does I won't miss threads like this...

Bingo

Dempsey is a valuable player for Fulham, particularly this year with his goals and, I think, a generally more consistent contribution. He has also done well when he has played for the USA. But articles like this just give those who don't watch him and the PL every week or see the better Champions League games a misleading impression that can only lead to confusion and disappointment.

One of the main reasons Demps has not been headhunted by the bigger clubs is his distinct lack of pace. He is good in front of goal, defends well, works hard and does not shirk from a challenge, bu I have never seen him beat anyone with the ball from the halfway line.
If he went to the bigger clubs I feel he would not get the playing time he does at a club like Fulham.

What a spiteful and ill informed article. Not the first from them, they seem to hate Fulham. Firstly Dempsey has scored 16 goals and if they can't be bothered to do the most basic of background checks there really is no hope for them. Secondly he has every chance to win something here, this year apart we will always be in with a chance of winning the domestic cups.

Dempsey deserves a crack at Champions League football, but he loves it here as well. He has improved immeasurably as a result of playing for this club and I dare say he would be the first to acknowledge that. I don't see his claim that by 33 he'd like to have played Champions League football as a come-get me plea. Most players would say the same thing.

Barry out of Euros

Seems strange that Jagielka is the replacement. Surely, if Henderson is on standby, a like-for-like swap would make more sense?See More

"+1.  He has handled the CL questions candidly and without ever disparaging Fulham in any way.  "
