Has Clint Dempsey Outgrown Fulham FC?
American Star Could Soon Switch Clubs
Clint Dempsey faces an age-old problem. The question for many athletes often boils down to wanting to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond. A bigger team means more prominence, better experience with better talent and usually more money.
Dempsey is having the best year in his career. He has eighteen goals (in all competitions) in the current season, including two hat tricks. He is currently seventh among leading scorers, ahead of stars like Mario Balotelli and Gareth Bale (although in his defense, Bale is more of an enabler than a scorer).
The American has shown his talent, not only with his great technical ability with the ball (which he has always possessed), but also with an uncanny smell for goal.
Dempsey is carrying the Fulham team which currently sits 13 points away from European qualification, which is the most the modest team can yearn for.
With Dempsey having a breakout year, many are suddenly clamoring for him to move to a team where he actually has a chance to win something, rather than avoiding relegation and sitting comfortably in the middle region of the standings.
Is it more impressive if Dempsey sticks with his current club and fights for a spot in European competition or is it more impressive for Dempsey to move to one of the big clubs?
The all-time top American scorer in the Premier League with 42 goals, Dempsey mentioned earlier this year that he would like to play in the UEFA Champions League.
With Fulham far from ever reaching that stage, it sees a direct statement from the American that he wants to get out to a top team in Europe.
For now no team seems to have taken the bait for Dempsey, although they may be waiting for a better time to approach the American or waiting to see if his spike in form has been luck or a true improvement in his class.
