Has Clint Dempsey Outgrown Fulham FC?

American Star Could Soon Switch Clubs

Clint Dempsey

Clint Dempsey faces an age-old problem. The question for many athletes often boils down to wanting to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond. A bigger team means more prominence, better experience with better talent and usually more money.

Dempsey is having the best year in his career. He has eighteen goals (in all competitions) in the current season, including two hat tricks. He is currently seventh among leading scorers, ahead of stars like Mario Balotelli and Gareth Bale (although in his defense, Bale is more of an enabler than a scorer).

The American has shown his talent, not only with his great technical ability with the ball (which he has always possessed), but also with an uncanny smell for goal.

Dempsey is carrying the Fulham team which currently sits 13 points away from European qualification, which is the most the modest team can yearn for.

With Dempsey having a breakout year, many are suddenly clamoring for him to move to a team where he actually has a chance to win something, rather than avoiding relegation and sitting comfortably in the middle region of the standings.

Is it more impressive if Dempsey sticks with his current club and fights for a spot in European competition or is it more impressive for Dempsey to move to one of the big clubs?

The all-time top American scorer in the Premier League with 42 goals, Dempsey mentioned earlier this year that he would like to play in the UEFA Champions League.

With Fulham far from ever reaching that stage, it sees a direct statement from the American that he wants to get out to a top team in Europe.

For now no team seems to have taken the bait for Dempsey, although they may be waiting for a better time to approach the American or waiting to see if his spike in form has been luck or a true improvement in his class.

I guess Demps' magnificent long distance scoring strike against Stoke takes care of that concern! Hey, let's just admit that anyone who scores about half a side's goals is probably essential to the side's success, right? Especially when it's a goal-challenged side with no consistent natural striker to begin with; add to that that Demps was never intended to be a striker. I mean, it's not rocket science. Just look at the stats, and everyone stop over-analyzing. He has clearly benefited from Dembele's and Ruiz's improved moves in the middle attack, allowing him to find openings in front of the net.

he is wasteful shooting far too often from distance when alternative options are more sensible. He rarely scores with long shots (I am almost certain all his goals are inside the box this season but wouldn't bet on it because I may have forgoten the odd something).

I personally think Deuce is one of the starting players our team has needed and is essential for our team to gain sucess. we have always been there or there abouts, last 16, semi's and even a final. Yet we never had the strength and depth, now that we are signing players like Dembele and Ruiz as well as being linked with bigger names instead of has beens!!

Jesus - he'd  be one of the Hispanics that are in the majority where you live? Aside from that I hope Dempsey stays at FFC, but the way he is playing he'd be an asset to any team and good luck to him if he decides to move on (please not Chelski though).

The Champions League is highly rated by the top clubs that participate because it brings in a lot of money in the latter stages. Also, those late stages usually bring together top quality teams, The chance to play Barcelona, currently, is not to be turned down by any Premier League side who want to test themselves against the best and enhance their own status.

CLF is over rated .Club to me ,along with the PL and FA should be the most important,SAD thats no longer the case.
Probably because of the influx in  foreign players.

It was a wonderful shot with a lot of power and on target. And Pogrebnyak's shot was excellent too.

Let's hope that it is the start of improved long range shots from throughout the team because too often those shots have been scuffed or gone wildly wide or high. If a shot has reasonable power and is on target then even if it doesn't go in directly then it might be parried by the goalkeeper to a Fulham player or on to the woodwork or even just out for a corner which gives the team another chance.

Also, reasonably on-target shooting from outside the box pulls defenders out to mark the shooters and opens things up for through balls and the like into the box.  That was a great strike by Clint, and he's had others from distance as well.  As long as they've got some power and make the keeper work -- and there's no better option available at the time -- I don't mind them, unless we're in need of a goal to tie or win with just a few minutes left in the match, in which situation there have been times when Clint (and others) have taken shots from long range when I thought working for a higher-precentage shot might have been better.  Then again, he and the others are out there playing and I'm watching, so what do I know?

Seems strange that Jagielka is the replacement. Surely, if Henderson is on standby, a like-for-like swap would make more sense?See More
