Permalink Reply by John Smith on February 11, 2012 at 16:59 He worried me today, his positioning was great as always but his heading was really poor. I don't see what his return has to do with the full backs playing well. I think more than anything else they were just really up for it today. Riise had a flawless game, the best he's had since being here. Kelly had a good first half but a bit shaky in the second, just as well Etherington was poor.

Well I suppose it is just a massive coincidence then. Hughes is back and the other 3 defenders look much more solid. Go figure!
Permalink Reply by St Eve on February 11, 2012 at 17:02 It is all about confidence. The defence doesn't have to worry about a Senderos mistake. Hughes is solid, does his job allowing everyone else to do their respective jobs

Permalink Reply by John Smith on February 11, 2012 at 17:04 He did make mistakes though, he missed or misdirected lots of headers. Senderos has a bad habit of marking too tight but he never misses headers. I don't buy this argument that he unsettles our defence.

Permalink Reply by Mike p on February 11, 2012 at 17:09 Hughes is better on the deck and in the prem thats what matters more, I'd pick Hughes every time.
agree with your post 100% St Eve.
Permalink Reply by nleldorado on February 11, 2012 at 17:50 the fact that Hughes hasn't started for a long time just demonstrates the fact that Jol is clueless and that he is an incompetent manager. He dropped our most consistent player over the past couple of seasons for....wait for it....PHILIPPE SENDEROS!!!!! (possibly the biggest bungling oaf of a centre back bar Titus Bramble)
Permalink Reply by John Smith on February 11, 2012 at 17:54 Well I'm to go against the tide and say our good defensive performance had nothing to do with Hughes, that Hughes made at least three errors today more than Senderos usually does and that Senderos is wrongly victimised. Hughes is a good defender and we've missed his positioning at times but he could've cost us goals today by missing so many headers.
If Hughes plays more often he will always be better than Senderos,Hughes has a brain.
