It is not about about Senderos being victimised. Maybe use wasn't perfect but he was pretty damn good. I don't recall the so called errors but I will take another look but clearly they weren't game changing. Hughes is not match fit and will get back to his usual consistent self as he has for many years. senderos is an accident waiting to happen. He is younger and hopefully will learn. Until then Welcome back Mr. Hughes
John Smith said:Well I'm to go against the tide and say our good defensive performance had nothing to do with Hughes, that Hughes made at least three errors today more than Senderos usually does and that Senderos is wrongly victimised. Hughes is a good defender and we've missed his positioning at times but he could've cost us goals today by missing so many headers.

Permalink Reply by Onion Shipment Vinielli on February 11, 2012 at 18:59 John, Aaron Hughes is a better defender than Senderos. Hangeland- and the rest of the defenders- feel more comfortable with his presence because they no he is not going to go on a 'headless' as Senderos does about 5 times per game

He worried me today, his positioning was great as always but his heading was really poor. I don't see what his return has to do with the full backs playing well. I think more than anything else they were just really up for it today. Riise had a flawless game, the best he's had since being here. Kelly had a good first half but a bit shaky in the second, just as well Etherington was poor.
St Eve said:Well I suppose it is just a massive coincidence then. Hughes is back and the other 3 defenders look much more solid. Go figure!

Permalink Reply by Matt Keen on February 11, 2012 at 19:06 Senderos is outright awful most of the time, Hughes gives me more confidence.
To tell the truth, I think we need better than both of them - Hughes has been a fantastic servant, but, as mentioned on here, his aerial skills are atrocious for a centre back, and as much as most will defend him, he's lost a yard of pace - Which was why him and Hangeland worked so well together. We should be looking to offload Senderos, bring someone else in and keep AH as back up.
On a side note, Kelly and Riise had good games today!
Permalink Reply by Mike p on February 11, 2012 at 19:07 Last season we conceded 43 goals from 38 games This season we've already conceded 36 from 25 games, the stats speak for themselves our defence is better with Hughes in it. BUT Jol prefers Senderos? .
Permalink Reply by Lewis Johnston on February 11, 2012 at 19:15 Agreed. Why didnt Jol see this at the start of the season. We all did.

Permalink Reply by Penalty Shot on February 12, 2012 at 1:01 I thought all four backs were outstanding today. Hughes was much better today than his last game. It might have been the team but I suspect that he just needed more playing time. Retabbly, Ethu was a disappointment for me. He was not able to hold the middle as strongly as I would have liked. In retrospect, it might have been better to replace Murphy with Baird but I don't want to second guess Jol because at least he put a defensive player into the game for the last 10 min to try to hold onto the lead. That was the correct decision in my mind unlike what happened in the WBA game when we went ahead and Jol did not replace Murphy at the 70-80 min mark.
